Local KBC? Wean away then....

Hi...I am back and sooner this time! How are you people maintaining your health?? Well, most of you, when I said 'health', you must be thinking of physical health and would be probably be priding yourself on your near-perfect body. And that certainly was not I meant....What I meant was mental health! Now that is one point for readers of this post to mull over and decide if you are healthy. The point I am trying to drive home in this post is the mindless Q&A-like conversation taking place between two persons every now and then, in all walks of life ( some may include 'seemingly' in that sentence but I  thought that would be untrue!). That is the case mostly when the two persons involved are formal acquaintances. One asks a question and the other replies. That's it! The conversation ends. There are no leading questions to develop a kind of intimacy by which friendships bloom. This, most of you,by now (majority, the elders), must be attributing it to the advent of

Comfort zones! Are you in one?

Hi everybody,      Sorry to those who were waiting for my blog (and others please ignore if you haven't!) but it has been quite a long time from the last post. I have been quite busy moving from the environment of safety and comfort (of course, our homes) to the new environs of hostel. yes, I too like many others, am grappling with the pros and cons of hostel life and I haven't yet identified which gains the upper hand. Hostel life can be, is and will be a daunting task after being in a surrounding where you are completely protected. But, as has been said, YOU EXCEL ONLY WHEN YOU ARE PULLED OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE. It is amazing how one can find time for oneself when there are no TVs around and where computers are at a distance from you (like here at SASTRA). You have to nearly walk for 15 minutes to get to a computer! And, yeah, believe me, there is ample time to discover oneself, or rediscover in some cases, have fun through means of books and also through wandering with a

Help ourselves

In this age of exorbitant and ever-increasing fuel prices, cycles are very much necessary. They represent not only a way of conserving fuel and ultimately money, but also provides for a healthy body and reduces global warming. I  always try to cycle to short distances and sometimes long too just for the benefit it provides. It is said that a 5% increase in cycling saves about 100 million tonnes of CO2 released. Our travel lives now have increasingly become dependent on  cars and bikes. There was a period once when we yearned for only the three basic necessities of life for every person in this world. Where has all that gone?  Seems now we have a fourth basic necessity in ACs and a fifth in cars and bikes! The increase in demand of ACs has been due to hot weather conditions outside and that is because of our craze for the fifth basic necessity. Hence, I appeal to the readers to reduce the usage of cars and bikes and walk or cycle to distances coverable by those modes of transport.

Never knew reading was so much fun!

"The Mentalist' is one show that has impressed me the most. The method by which he solves (or closes) cases, however tough they may be, calls for attention. It is not an unreal thing by any stretch of imagination. Rather, it is very much real.  Patrick delves deep into the minds of people and literally digs out information on whether a person committed the supposed crime even when  hard evidence points against. There are people like that in this world and more importantly, bookworms contribute to major portion of them although some of them deny this and some refuse to let themselves out. Book-reading is an art that has to be cultivated right from your childhood. They may seem boring for a person who wants to  literally  be on his toes everytime. But when he controls his urge and sits down with a book which fascinates him, then the rest of his world fades into oblivion. I have personally experienced this with my cousin sis. She forgets everything when you give her her book. Ev

Mind-numbing Numbers.

Music maketh your mood. Who can dare argue against it? Anybody? I doubt it. I am putting down a list of 5 on some  of the numbers that sums up different moods. This is a start and with hope, more numbers will follow. And essentially, all these are Tamil numbers. We seem to be more enthused by the Western songs but personally for me, I find it tough to follow them except for few(I mean very few!) bands. 1. Ulagam Unakku( Dhanush's Uthamaputhiran)           - Inspiration. 2. Kandha Kara Vada( Saguni)                                   - Chennai's  magnanimity 3. Poovukkul Olindhirukkum( Jeans)                           - Sleep-inducing Melody 4. Santhosham( Youth)                                                - Reflecting on Life 5. En Frienda Pola and Nalla Nanban ( Nanban)          - Highlights of Friendship P.S : I will include old songs once it hits me. Please feel free to post your comments on the songs above.

Persie: In or Out?

Manchester City has literally bought the title last season with the signings of stars like Adebayor, Toure and Nasri. But, they have half-heartedly placed a bid for Van Persie, given his spate of injuries. He had a great last season  but is now preferring to move on to other clubs citing the need for trophies. Had Arsenal succeeded  in keeping Nasri, Adebayor and other players, their trophy drought would have come to an end long before.  Now, Arsenal is hoping against hope that Persie remains in the side with the same rich vein of form of the previous season. They have had excellent signings this window with Podolski and Giroud coming on board. If Van Persie stays on, their forward line would be one to be envied of. Van Persie playing behind Giroud  and supported by Gervinho and Podolski sounds dangerous.  But, RVP cannot be blamed for moving to any trophy-winning clubs. He has to decide between staying at Arsenal (which has stood with him all the years) and help them wi

Insignificant but proud

The recent discovery(or not) of the Higgs Boson was an intense search which took roots 50 years before. The lab at CERN was commissioned only in 2010 and within two years of its inception, it has yielded fruits. Scientists at CERN are not even terming it an discovery, saying they have a long journey ahead of them to firmly establish the particle's identity. Even a 5 sigma, which means the fault will be one in  3.5 million chances , could not convince the scientists that it is indeed a Higgs Boson. This confirmation could take even longer since the lab is to be shut down for maintenance soon. The first part of the particle's name is after the scientist who initially hypothesized its presence, Dr. Peter Higgs. The second part is of much importance to us Indians. It is named after the INDIAN scientist Satyendranath Bose. This is indeed an achievement for India. The West often forgets us during  moments of world-changing discoveries but we have nevertheless played an impo rtant

The Consistent Loser

Hi Guys, so this is my first post and I will start by writing on my favourite topic: SPORTS. The sport now will be tennis and in particular the individual who has been losing in the semis of any Slam with a great deal of consistency. Yes, you guessed it right. It is Andy Murray.  His tennis is not at fault for his consistent losses but his mentality is. A lot has been said in the media about his  semifinal losses to invariably one of the top three and this has hurt him. He has looked good this Championships and with Nadal suffering a shock defeat to Rosol, he has a bright chance of breaking that semifinal jinx but if he gets through, mind you Tsonga is no push-over with his ever present energy and booming serves, the final is a tall ask whoever he faces Novak or Roger.  So, this sets up the brilliant final days of the 2012 Championships.
